A proper well thought out, witty, stylish, and proof read post coming soon!
Some little tidbits to start:
I live in Eugene, Oregon and love it though I do miss previous places I’ve lived in California from time to time. I particularly miss my walks to Golden Gate Bakery in San Francisco when I lived nearby. Or the days I’d walk all the way over to Udon Mugizo in Japantown.
I’ve been sewing since I was 8 years old though I didn’t get heavy into it until I was 17. This was when I was gifted my first working sewing machine by one of my high school teachers. Can you believe that? What a legend. If you are reading this Mrs. Miller of Nevada Union High School you are the very best <3 I’m here still sewing 20 years later. With sewing I consider myself an intermediate+ seamstress but a beginner quilter. I’m 95% self taught at this point in my life so I often find I do things backwards or unusual ways. One of the most interesting parts of buying quilt patterns lately is learning these construction techniques I would have never thought of like disappearing blocks.
I love working with natural fibers; cottons, linens, and silks are my favorites. For the first half of my sewing life I made a bunch of clothes, bow ties, and dolls all with quilting cottons. Now that I’ve learned to quilt I have fun experimenting with making quilts out of second hand clothing or clothing oriented materials like old remnants of silk bolts for kimono, wool canvas from the military surplus shop, and re-working some of my old linen historical clothing fails. That said I do completely love modern designer quilting cottons and like to treat myself to some projects in it each year. I hope my sewing practice can be 90%+ upcycling or sustainable materials and then 10% or so for more affordable options (organic ain’t cheap), fabric from local mom and pop owned shops, or just the freedom to get what I need without guilt. You know what they say “perfect is the enemy of good”
I’m currently self studying Japanese; I’m too nervous to speak it but I love reading in it. One of these days I’ll get over my introvert nature and get a tutor but till then I’ll be curled up on the couch reading some slice-of-life manga.
Gardening, cooking, and baking are some of my other hobbies.
